World Food Day

October 16, 2021

Food is a rare commodity in some parts of the world. It is a gloomy reality, and people ought to be aware of it. Many organizations helping those in need have been voicing their concerns. A way to intensify action is using the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations as a platform to raise awareness of this issue affecting many of our planet’s inhabitants. The World Food Day gels well with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) platform to not only voice the concerns NGOs have but to applaud their efforts and motivate them by saying: Hey! We are fighting with you.

We keep pushing and pushing our planet by adding a needless burden to our environment, climate, and finite natural resources. We keep manufacturing, devouring and wasting food at an alarming rate. It boils down to education and understanding the information accessible to you. We grew up in a Western society with our parents telling us to eat our food as children are starving in Africa. We grow up sensitive to food. However, we do not get the complete picture until later, depending on what we want to be informed. We now see what our parents told us as a cliché, but it is an unfinished statement. They are not starving because we do not eat our food. They are starving because they do not have access to it.

SDG Advocate Jeffrey D. Sachs said: “We need to defend the interests of those whom we’ve never met and never will”. We want to add to Sachs’ quote that defending the interests of the planet we live in by being cautious of its natural resources should be the norm, as achieving sustainability is a must. We must raise awareness of our surroundings and gather information to defend the interests of those we have never met and never will. We have the power and the ability to create real change and help our planet heal its environment and feed its people.

What we as a company consider to be a shame is that food is going to waste rather than to those in need. We are not disingenuous as Refork has time and time again advocated in favour of sustainability with a portfolio that aligns with the message: We are fighting with you too.

We want to use this post to show our gratitude to the real heroes fighting to change the status quo every day. We want to encourage you to do so, too, by visiting the World Food Day website made by people wanting the same thing we want: Change.
